Did you know that 87-91% of digital finance users in Nigeria have encountered fraud attempts relating to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through voice cloning or deepfake videos?
What Are Deepfakes?
Deepfakes are realistic but fake videos, audio, or images of real people, usually created with AI. Scammers can clone your voice from just a short recording and use it to trick family members into sending money or use your photos to produce fake videos showing you promoting scams you know nothing about.
Common AI-Powered Scams
- Voice Cloning Calls: Scammers extract a few seconds of your voice from social media or voicemail, use AI to clone it, and call your family, friends and colleagues requesting urgent bank transfers.
- Deepfake Video Calls: Fraudsters use real-time face-swapping technology to pose as bank officials during video calls, requesting your account details or one-time passwords (OTPs).
- AI-Generated Phishing Messages: A lot of scam messages are no longer poorly written with spelling errors. AI now crafts perfect, personalized messages that mimic official bank communications.
- Fake Investment Promotions: Scammers create deep-fake videos of celebrities, business leaders, or even bank executives promoting “too-good-to-be-true” investment opportunities.
As you protect yourself from AI-powered scams, remember Fidelity Bank WILL NEVER Ask for your PIN, password, or OTP; Call and pressure you to transfer money; Ask you to install any app via unknown links; or Request verification through unofficial channels.
